Today’s fishing rods are made of incredible composite materials for strength and flexibility.  Gone are the days of fishing with an old cane pole. Modern fishing rods are paired with high tech reels and specifically designed for each different type of fishing.

The fishing rod is thick at the bottom and tapered tat the top and most feature guides for which the fishing line runs through. These guides are bound onto the fishing rod with a strong type of thread and are also glued with an epoxy resin.

This basic design allows handling stability and flexible movement through the entire length of the shaft. When a fishing rod is flexed (bent over) it absorbs some of the strain being put on the fishing line to allow lighter lines to be used and/or the angler to catch larger fish in the fishing line chosen.

Types of Fishing Rods and Specifications

Fishing Rods and rod specifications vary greatly depending on the type of fishing being done. Although certain generic type of rods (saltwater/freshwater) can be used in a number of situations, if you budget allows, you should choose a fishing rod specifically designed for your type of fishing.

A typical fishing rod measures anything from 2 to 5 m (6 to 16 feet) and varies in depending on the strain caused in each fishing activity. The length has a lot to do with the withstanding force exerted by the fish to the pole and determines for the most part the performance of the fishing rod.

Cane Poles

Cane poles are the least sophisticated fishing rods. These are usually only seen on old garages or by people making something out of necessity. This is because modern fishing rods made of considerably better materials are now quite cheap. Cane fishing rods refers to fishing rods made of bamboo or another flexible wood material with the most basic line attached.

Unlike more sophisticated fishing rods, cane poles often have a fixed line and do not have anywhere to attaché a reel.

Spinning Rods

These types of fishing rods are the most popular today. They can be used either for heavyweight or lightweight fish. A Spinning rod can often be used tof both saltwater and freshwater and a variety of fish (eg trout, walleye and bass). They vary in measurements from 1.5 to 2.5 m (5 to 7 feet )

Spinning poles are commonly used in bass fishing competition because of their flexibility and tolerance to stress. They accommodate bigger and tougher lines and are often good for the beginner because the fishing rod absorbs much of the stress of the fish helping to avoid tangles and breakages.

Jigging Rods

These rods are best for heavy lures and baits especially when trolling (pulling the lure behind a boat around 60m below the ocean’s surface). Jigging rods are made of solid materials (like carbon) which accounts to their heaviness and strength.

Some oceans have erratic undersea currents.  This can mean lures get disturbed underwater and might cause confusion among fish if the lines are not long and heavy enough to withstand and tolerate under sea water currents.

Jigging rods are best used to target fish which live at the bottom of the sea like cod and halibut.
